FROM THE FIRST IDEA TO THE FIRST SCENE

There’s a place
to begin.

SKELETON Writer organizes your story into acts and scenes, with shots whenever you need them. You don’t need to learn the file format to start.

The first public Windows installer is being prepared. These steps describe the desktop workflow. You can download the sample story and assistant kit now.

Start with an idea.

  1. After installing SKELETON, choose a folder for your writing. An empty folder is fine.
  2. Choose New story. Give it a title and select a blank, short-film, episode, or commercial structure.
  3. Write what happens in your first scene. Add and organize scenes as your story develops. Shots are optional.
  4. Save your work. Use Save a copy when you want to keep a separate draft.

Bring a SKEL draft.

Choose Import in the editor, then select your SKEL, YAML, or JSON file. Review the local checks and save it under a new filename in your story folder.

Our sample, The Last Light, contains two acts and three scenes. It is a draft with no shots, so you can start with the story itself.

Work with your assistant.

  1. Download and unzip the assistant kit. Use skel-convert-story for existing prose, treatments, or scripts, and skel-structure to develop an existing SKEL draft.
  2. Give your assistant the chosen skill’s instructions and references, along with the writing you want to share.
  3. Ask it to preserve your writing and return a separate SKEL draft, explaining any assumptions or omissions.
  4. Import the result into SKELETON. Structural checks help find format problems; you still review the story and creative choices.

The optional checker requires Node.js 22+. The desktop writer does not require you to install Node.js. External AI services have their own terms, privacy policies, and possible charges.
